About
Joanne is an Indiana Artist and has lived in Bloomington most of her life. She earned her BFA at the Arts Institute of Chicago and completed her MA in Therapeutic Recreation at Indiana University. Joanne has shared her creativity with all ages and worked a number of years as an activity directory at retirement communities. Recently retired herself, Joanne is able to spend more time painting and exploring techniques.
Intrigued by the energy of the moment, Joanne was fascinated by the fluidity of the bamboo brush on rice paper and studied with several Chinese artists. She particularly enjoyed trying to adapt this style in her paintings of local bird and flowers. She then moved her attention to explore the movement of watercolor on watercolor paper in order to convey fleeting moments and freshness of nature. Recently she has returned to abstract paintings, which she began doing when at the Art Institute of Chicago. She refers to the colors of nature in these abstractions and often uses her hands to manipulate the acrylic paint. Her gesture drawing series come from years of sketching musicians as the play music. “Its just a natural means of enjoyment – kind of like dancing on paper.” Joanne is a member of
